Western Australia shines on the national stage 15/04/2017

As urban development moves into more environmentally challenging areas, it is critical that as an industry we strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for the environment and the broader community.

As urban development moves into more environmentally challenging areas, it is critical that as an industry we strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for the environment and the broader community.

One way UDIA recognises and encourages best practice in terms of the environment is through our Awards for Excellence program.

The prestigious National Awards for Excellence were held here in Perth on Thursday April 6 and it was fantastic to see a Western Australian project receive the national award for excellence in the environment category.

The winner, Osprey Waters by Mirvac, is located on the Peel Inlet near the growth hot spot of Mandurah and provides a great balance between environmental management and community creation.

Despite the many challenges facing the project, the awards judges noted in their decision that the waterfront area has been expertly handled and successfully provides for areas of public access, areas of waterfront protection and retention of substantial vegetation.

It is also supplemented with endemic species, creation of nesting sites, the management of stormwater outflows and the development of a great playground facility, walking trail network and a range of public facilities. Sustainability and environmental issues are increasingly on the agenda for many homebuyers and it is important projects like Osprey Waters continue to lead the way.

Two individuals from WA were also awarded for their dedication to the industry and the Institute.

LWP Property Group Managing Director Danny Murphy was recognised for his service to the urban development industry over his 30-year career.

Mr Murphy has been an icon of the WA property industry for many years and often volunteers his time to assist UDIA, including as a Councillor, first in South Australia and then when he moved west.

Amex Corporation Managing Director Cameron Shephard was awarded National Life Membership on the night due to his significant contribution to UDIA at a national level over many years.

Mr Shepard has been a member of UDIA for over 20 years and dedicated an extensive amount of time to the Institute as a State Council member for two terms, then serving as UDIA WA’s President from 2011 to 2013 and UDIA’s National President from 2013 to 2015.

In a sector that is creating the communities that we will live in into the future, programs such as the awards encourage best practice and recognise those that are delivering outstanding achievements as examples for the broader industry.
